This article is a paean to testing.



Last year the boy couldn't read, and his teacher had no idea why. This year, the boy took a test that revealed his specific problem: He did not know the sounds corresponding to each letter. That meant he was not ready to learn which letters made up each word. At last his teacher knew how to help him.



This sounds like a Dick and Jane parody, doesn't it?

High Court Throws Out No-pass, No-drive

The Kentucky Supreme Court ruled yesterday that the "no pass, no drive" law is unconstitutional. Under Kentucky's no-pass, no-drive law, adopted voluntarily by all but 40 of the state's 176 school districts, the state has denied or revoked teen-agers' licenses nearly 23,000 times since 1996.

A state study released Thursday showed nearly one out of four students of Arizona's Class of 2002 failed to earn a high school diploma after five years. The state knows some students dropped out, but thousands of others simply disappeared from the system.
