    Superintendent Spotlight

Dr. Randolph E. Ward Name: Dr. Randolph E. Ward

District: San Diego County Office of Education

    Location: San Diego, California

District Enrollment: 42 school districts with a combined enrollment of 495,000

Number of Years at District: Nine months

    # What is the biggest challenge you face as a superintendent?

Our districts aim to create the appropriate incentives within the entire educational community that elicit the intentional behaviors from both children and adults that will lead to closing the achievement gap for some and accelerated achievement for all. These behaviors must be demonstrated despite the race, language, or the socioeconomic family circumstances of the students.

    # What's the best advice you've ever received as superintendent?

"You can accomplish anything in life provided that you do not mind who gets the credit," according to Harry S. Truman quoted in the Jim Collins book Good to Great.

    # What is your greatest achievement as superintendent and how did you achieve it?

In Oakland we were the most improved school district in the state of California. We closed the achievement gap considerably in the three years of my tenure despite making considerable budget cuts simultaneously. That work continues in my absence. We did so as a team by creating far-reaching and clear goals, finding the talent to create and implement the plan, religiously holding all accountable for performance, and learning through data what adjustments will bring the greatest impact.
