Why the MCAS Is Not Good For Students

    Testimony of Rashene McIntyre
Public Hearing on the MCAS Reform Bill - H. 561
    June 5th, 2007

Hello, my name is Rashene McIntyre. I am here to talk about why the MCAS is not good for students.

MCAS can stop people from graduating or getting a high school diploma.

I have taken the MCAS 7 times and have not passed, but I have improved my scores each time.

I have decided that there are more important things to focus on, like learning about the world in Humanities and learning technique in Music, instead of being pulled out to keep testing.

It is not fair that the MCAS messes with people's future and can stop them from graduating.

Some students feel like failures and might drop out of school. Not me. I will get my certificate of attendance next June.

MCAS only tests some of the skills that are important to have when you graduate from high school.

Coming from a rough neighborhood, school is a place to learn:

    to be respected
    to be a better person
to deal with different kinds of people
    to feel good about myself.

The MCAS only causes me and other people to lose confidence.

I don't want my younger brother and sister to go through this.

If I had my wish, I wouldn't want any more young achievers to be stopped from graduating by not passing the MCAS. The MCAS does not show anything these young people know.

I hope all the lawmakers of Massachusetts will consider getting rid of the MCAS.

All that it does is hurt kids. Thank you.
