Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools receive grant for performance pay

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The U.S. Department of Education has granted the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools nearly $1.9 million to launch a pilot pay-for-performance program, school district officials announced Thursday.

The program, which links teacher and principal pay to student achievement, will be tested in six schools next year and will be expanded to include 10 additional schools in following years, officials said.

"This grant will help us build - and put in place - compensation reform that rewards teachers for their students' academic performance in the classroom," said Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Superintendent Peter Gorman.

The grant will pay for the first year of the program, and officials plan to request more federal funding to expand it.

School officials said they plan to use the program to help recruit and retain qualified teachers and principals in high-need schools.
