Toxic School
by Joseph Mugivan/Advocate for School
Indoor Air Quality/NYC
Colleagues,
I have come to the conclusion that my concerns about my toxic
school and vapor intrusion has not affected educational administrators
because I simply have not been using the appropriate language.....
Here goes:
In 2003 I researched the toxic site where my school was built with
"higher order thinking skills". I figured that there should be
"accountability" when dealing with dangerous schools and maybe there should
be a "school report card" listing the toxins in order that parents will have
"school choice" to move their children from "underperforming" toxic schools
to safer schools.
Without "authentic assessment" of the air quality of these toxic
schools, we will not be able to determine their AYP [annual yearly progress]
of cleaning up these sights. Looking at the various types of toxins and how
they affect their children's health will provide "differentiated
instruction" to the community. Such "evaluation" of toxic schools should
not be subjective but provide "rigor" in determining their toxicity.
When dealing with such dangerous elements, it is important to
"utilize" "critical thinking". We can not have "low expectations" that the
toxins will not be dangerous to young children, whose bodies are developing.
It is important that we put "children first" and close these schools pending
an independent state inquiry.
Since a "highly qualified teacher" ha s brought the situation to
our attention, we need to act accordingly. We are living in the "21st
century" and should not tolerate schools built on toxic sites. Where are the
"standards" for children's health?
The purpose of this e mail is to provide a "meaningful education"
about toxic schools. Regulatory agencies need to provide more "test prep" to
their industrial hygienists for determining vapor intrusion at these sites
using "data-driven instruction" models to provide the most accurate
information about how children are more susceptible to poor air quality.
Then they can "turn and talk" to the community in a candid and truthful way.
I hope that this "praxis" of information will provide a "sound
education" about how we may be poisoning kids and teachers in the "21st
century" as we build schools on toxic sites.
