    On the Distribution of Income

    Susan Ohanian

In a recent taxi ride, I had occasion to look at a very fancy catalogue I found in the back seat: The Book: Neiman Marcus. I'd heard of their infamous Christmas Book but this was a run-of-the-mill men's catalogue. Well, run-of-the-mill for the wealthy.

    Here are some sample items:

  • striped cotton shirt: $650

  • painted silk necktie: $200

  • men's v-neck polyester sweater: $695

  • hooded sweatshirt: $395

  • Even the grunge look has a high price when you're wealthy. At first glance, I couldn't help but feel like rich people spend a lot of money to look like they buy their clothes at K-Mart. But there are subtle distinctions: little leather strips here and there on the sweatshirt, for example.

But the real point here is the distance between the $395 sweatshirt and the children living in poverty whose healthcare the President just vetoed.
