Score Educational Centers, a national tutoring chain founded 15 years ago in Palo Alto, will shutter nearly half its 155 sites by the end of the year, The Chronicle has learned.

Of the 75 closures, 28 will be in California, including three in San Jose.

A spokeswoman said the company is restructuring its services - retaining centers that provide both individual tutoring and computer-assisted learning, and closing the sites that don't offer both.

The company, part of Kaplan Inc., helps children in pre-kindergarten through 10th grade with math, reading, spelling and writing.

The centers on the closure list will remain open until the end of December.

Score, which operates in 11 states, has suffered a 13 percent enrollment decrease in recent months, according to a filing with the federal Securities and Exchange Commission.

Following the closures, California will have 33 Score sites, including several in the Bay Area.

"We're working closely with those families affected to help transition them to nearby centers," said spokeswoman Carina Wong. "We've notified all families enrolled with Score programs about the restructuring."

Existing customers at the designated sites will receive services for free in December, Wong said.

The Score chain is one of dozens of private tutoring companies used by the state's public schools to provide academic support to children in low-performing schools, as required by the federal No Child Left Behind Act. It's unclear how many of the Score sites set for closure provide the publicly funded service.

It's also unclear how many jobs will be lost because of the closures. Wong said the company is working with employees to identify open positions at other Score sites or at Kaplan locations, including test preparation centers.

The first Score center opened in 1992 in Palo Alto. Four years later, the company was acquired by Kaplan Inc., a subsidiary of the Washington Post Co. Since its inception, Score has served more than 250,000 children, according to its promotional materials.
