    Test for New Principals

Ohanian Comment: Just as I've long suggested the "love" test for teacher contract renewal, so, too, do I offer it as essential for new principal hires. The love test is simple. It costs no money, requires no #2 pencils, no training by the Broad Foundation. The love test requires ten people, including children, to stand up in a public forum and testify that the person under consideration is loved. Relatives of the applicant are not excluded from testifying. Being capable of giving and receiving affection should be a requirement to work in public schools.

Aspiring principals will have to pass a tough new test to get the job.

The move is intended to give superintendents - who have the final say in the hiring of principals - access to a pool of hundreds of candidates.

"It's a better way to find the best candidates," said Department of Education spokeswoman Melody Meyer.

The five qualities sought by education officials are: leadership; use of data; knowledge of curriculum, teaching and testing; staff development; and resource management.

Principals' union spokesman Brian Gibbons said the five qualities are aligned with new evaluation measures for current principals.

Current principals are automatically part of the pool, while assistant principals and graduates of the city's Leadership Academy will have to pass the exam.

Those who fail to make the cut can still be considered for assistant principal jobs.
