    The only thing I want to know about these people is the one thing EdWeek still refuses to discuss openly: where does each of them stand on the structural question of sub-contracting public education to private for-profit managers and suppliers of education "services"?

    If we are really going to change the structure of our schooling so fundamentally, shouldn't there be a real, public discussion of the question? How can we know what these high-profile players are really after? Sadly, some Democrats as well as Republicans are guilty of subterfuge and self-dealing in the promotion of for-profit education "reform".

    As for us actual classroom teachers, the system we are defending isn't a "failed status-quo". It is Horace Mann's and John Dewey's ideal of a free and equal, democratically vital PUBLIC education for every child. The Forum for Education and Democracy has explicitly called on us to renew that very promise. That is the kind of declaration that can lead us past this mess the Bushies have made with NCLB.

    The edubusiness obfuscators, with their fake non-profit fronts and mealy-mouthed glossy websites, succeed in concealing their profit motivation from the citizens only because reporters and editors lack the courage to call them on it. Within our schools, they rely increasingly on intimidation and threats to silence opposition or exposure.

    We could wind up with our schools sub-contracted to some subsuduary of Haliburton or Blackwater Security, for all we know, free from the bother of bureaucratic interference or oversight. We are further along that path now than the public has any way of knowing.
