    Kids deserve a break

It is quite wonderful that Sam Schmidt, a Chicago second grader, made the case for recess to his school council. The outrage is that his school day has no room for recess a couple of times a day.

Address to the O. A. Thorp Local School Council

Recess should be one of the regular subjects like math or reading or spelling. I think kids should have a break in their day so they can recharge and have some fun. I wish I had recess. I feel sorry for the other kids, too, like me that don’t.

It’s hard to work all day long. I usually wake up at 5:00 in the morning just to have a little bit of fun before school because I know there isn’t any fun at school, so I try to make as much time as I can get without being super tired. In first grade Ms. Pruett let us go outside for recess when it was nice. We played tag. If the weather was bad we played in the room. My friend Sam and I sometimes played with Duplos or our YuGiOh cards and drew pictures. That was really fun. If I had a chance to run around during the day I would take it. I would run around and play tag and actually have a little bit of fun. I want to be with my friends, but during school I am only allowed to talk with my friends during lunch. And lunch is only twenty minutes.
