So How Many Hot Dogs Could You Eat in Ten Minutes?

    by Susan Ohanian

Call me negative, but I'm upset by this story. Remember, just short of 35,000 people signed The Petition to end NCLB?

Well, 40,000 showed up to watch a hotdog eating contest, not to mention that it was also televised.

On July 4th, Joey Chestnut ate 68 hot dogs in ten minutes at the 94th annual Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest in Coney Island, known as the Super Bowl of professional eating. Joey Chestnut is known as the king of "professional eaters," a term with which I am not familiar. For this 10-minute feat Joey Chestnut received $20,00 and a mustard belt.

His archrival, six-time titleholder Takeru (Tsunami) Kobayashi, who finished off 64 franks.

There are no jobs listed on in Internet sources for "professional eater." The New York Times calls Anthony Bourdain a "professional eater," but they're talking about $350 sushi at Masa in the Time Warner Center, vodka in Uzbekistan, guinea pig in Peru, pickled shark in Iceland.

There are endorsement possibilities for people who gain eating fame. Frito Lay has just introduced special snacks endorsed by two of Japan’s most famous eaters.

On the How to Do Just About Everything website, they claim that competitive eating is the wave of the future. If baseball was never your thing and you weren't very successful shooting free throws, maybe this is a sport for you. They advise: n order to be really successful you have to be a versatile eater. You can’t hang your hat on one food group; you have to be a cross-disciplined athlete.

Funny thing: I ate my annual hot dog at the Bristol 4th of July celebration. I think it took me about ten minutes to eat it. I followed it up with strawberry shortcake.

It is our tradition to stop off in Bristol after marching in the Warren parade. Yes, I wore the sandwich board with the headline Feds Hijacking Vermont Schools! I got scattered applause. Very scattered.

So what's wrong with this picture? What can we do to get public attention--besides have a hot dog eating contest?
