The nation's top CEO's pledged to work with President Obama to to resuscitate the economy during an hour-long late-afternoon session between the president and the Business Roundtable. Harold McGraw III, CEO of The McGraw-Hill Companies, started the post-speech question-and-answer session by telling Obama that he wanted to correct the record on big business' relationship with the new Democratic administration.
"There's a misperception, I think, in some peoples' minds that the relationship between business and the Obama administration is like, well, oil and vinegar," McGraw said. "Well, I would like to tell you that, from our standpoint, that couldn't be farther from the truth. Everybody in this room is anxious to see you succeed and wants to be a part of that."
The mutual reassuring continued. "I think you will find that this is actually an administration that also wants you to succeed in the same way that you want us to succeed," Obama told the CEOs. "As I said before, I am a strong believer in the ability of the free market to generate wealth and prosperity that's shared across the board. I think there are times where sometimes our economy gets out of balance. This is obviously one of those times. And so government has to intervene in a crisis, but the goal should always be to right the ship and let private enterprise do its magic."
Obama added later that he wanted the leaders to know he's not interested in big government running big business, despite the move toward tighter regulation. "I'm amused sometimes when I read sort of this talk of, well, you know, the Obama administration wants to get government in everybody's business. I don't; I want you guys to do your thing."
