Play: how It Shapes the Brain, Opens the Imagination, and Invigorates the Soul

from Play: how It Shapes the Brain, Opens the Imagination, and Invigorates the Soul, by Stuart Brown, M. D., founder of the National Institute for Play.

I have been presenting a seminar on play every fall to a group of preselected Stanford sophomores, followed by their participation in a two-week leadership immersion. Something I have noticed is how consistently bright these students all are, but as admission to Stanford has become more competitive in recent years, I have also noticed that their sense of autonomy has diminished. They appear to me, at least, to initiate less and less spontaneous joy than in years past. They seem to be in command of more information, combined with a consistent radar homing them in to be pleasing to the professors. With a few exceptions, they are in my opinion, suffering from chronic low-grade play deprivation, and are so used to their hectic, pressured, high-performance lives (despite still being kids) that they don't realize what they have missed in the pursuit of academic excellence and success.
