Resolution on Solidarity and Support for September 24 Day of Action at U. of California

Jack Gerson Comment: This resolution on the UC Sept. 24 day of action that was adopted unanimously by the following: Bay Area Labor Committee for Peace and Justice; OEA's Representative Council; and the Alameda County Central Labor Council. The only difference in the three resolutions was changing the name of the organization in the first sentence, and inserting the reference to CTA in the OEA resolution (about 2/3 of the way through).

Pledged participation in the Sept. 24 actions is starting to snowball, and many of the participants are explicitly saying that this is about defending quality public education at all levels against privatization. This may be the most visible blow yet struck against privatization.

Resolution on Solidarity and Support for September 24 Day of Action at U. of California

Resolved that Representative Council of the Oakland Education Association expresses its solidarity with and active support for the September 24 day of systemwide action at the University of California by university staff, students and faculty, including support for their struggle against layoffs, furloughs, threats to pensions and benefits, severe and damaging cuts to academic and research programs, huge tuition hikes which fall especially heavily on those who can’t afford to pay, and the growing privatization of the University of California. We fully support the September 24 one-day strike against UC’s unfair labor practices called by UPTE / CWA 9119 (UC research and technical workers) and the walkout of faculty on the same date (endorsed by the American Association of University Professors). We urge labor unions – including and especially CTA and its local affiliates -- and central labor councils throughout California to adopt similar solidarity and support resolutions, and we urge working people throughout California to wherever possible actively participate on September 24: join the picket lines, attend the rallies, participate in the teach-ins. Spread the solidarity, spread the walkout, spread the fight against privatization of public education.
