Rally September 24
Ohanian Comment: I met my husband at UC Berkeley--a LONG time ago--and I just want to say that I'm pleased the UC system is finally fighting back.
But it isn't just a UC fight. This is OUR fight.
See the great Rouge Forum poster here, with a Rouge Forum update.
The Rally on September 24 is being organized by the UC Berkeley Solidarity Alliance, with support from a core of members of a faculty group (SAVE--Save the University) as well as members from a variety of student groups, workers, staff, and unions.
The membership of the Solidarity Alliance includes union reps, some lecturers, some faculty, some grad students, and some undergrads.
The Rally has three goals (which I list in no particular order):
1) to support the members of UPTE, who will go out on strike that day and will have picket lines around the perimeter of the UC campus from 7:15 am to 5 pm that day. At exactly noon, the picket line in front of Sproul Plaza will move across the Plaza to Sather Gate, opening the Plaza for the Rally, which will take place from noon to 2 am.
2) to energize and unify the campus community in support of public education in California
3) to educate each other about the political crisis at hand and about ways to address it.
The Rally will include speakers representing unions, students (undergrad and grad), faculty, and community members.
On the evening of Sept 23 (the day before the Rally), a Teach-In will take place--in the Pauley Ballroom on campus, in a situation where proper "lectures" can be offered. The Teach-In is being organized by SAVE.
I am not surprised that there is some confusion as to what's going on, who is organizing what; things are moving very fast and so many people are involved that it is hard to keep everything straight even here in the middle of it.
I know that a contingent from SF State and from City College will be joining the picket lines and attending the Rally. The more people willing and able to join this first action, the more effective it will be.
Thank you for expressing interest. This is a fight to save public education at all levels in California.
