    Misplaced Blame

This blogger asks Duncan the question so-called news analysists refuse to ask. Question for Dick Gregory and the rest of them: When will you stop giving Duncan a free ride? And stand up and act like news analysts?

    by Duane S. Nickell

In a recent interview with NBC reporter David Gregory, U. S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, after reciting some unfavorable statistics relating to science and math education, made the following statement: "And we're paying a terrible price today with a tough economy because we've lost our way educationally."

Duncan apparently blames the current economic mess on our educational system. Neither Gregory nor any of the panelists bothered to challenge Duncan's outrageous statement. They didn't, so I will. I'm no economist, but my understanding is that the economic meltdown of 2008 happened mainly because the Ivy League-educated wizards on Wall Street recklessly invested hundreds of billions of dollars in high-risk mortgages. When the housing market soured, the economy collapsed, proving once again that even very smart people can make very dumb decisions. And so, Mr. Duncan, exactly how is that the fault of the public school system?
