re: Starbucks and Yahoo
and their sponsorship/promotion of Waiting for Superman film
TO: Starbucks (new) Digital Network
Ms. Gluzberg and Ms. Strentz,
I am/was a regular customer of Starbucks. I read your ad tonight with serious disappointment.
I am writing to let you know that if you proceed in sponsoring ads and continue your promotion of the pseudo-documentary called Waiting for Superman --which is clearly an unfair portrayal and violent slam on our public schools and public school teachers-- I will be withdrawing my money from my Starbucks account, and I will boycott Starbucks indefinitely.
Furthermore, I will share information about your sponsorship of Waiting for Superman with my extensive networks of educator colleagues in every professional organization, in every educational publication, and so on, about your sponsorship and promotion of such a defamatory production. And I will encourage friends and family to do the same.
I would encourage you to do your homework on the content of and hype surrounding this movie. You will want to note that this film was funded by many sources (some attempting to deeply bury this fact) who would directly benefit from privatization of education, mainly in the form of charter schools.
Last, make sure your decision makers check the facts before jumping on such a sensationalistic, greed-focused bandwagon. Do recommend that they have a view of Race to Nowhere, since films about education seem so important to them at this time.
My boycott starts at this very moment. I will begin by retrieving the $50 I just loaded on my Starbucks card earlier this week...
Sincerely,
Mary MacKay
