Chicken giveaway ruffles teacher feathers

I say we set up an interview and do a professional review before we dare give a free chicken sandwich to one of the baaaaaaaad teachers!!!!

The Florida Department of Education’s announcement that one teacher will be awarded a gift certificate for chicken burgers as a token of appreciation for what the state's 160,000 public school teachers do has not left educators speechless.

"This is just wrong," said Gay Parker, president of the Seminole Education Association.

Some people thought I was kidding when I reported in an earlier post that the DOE announced a new monthly contest for teachers called Teacher Treasures, with all encouraged to enter. This month's prize: A $100 gift certificate to the Chick-fil-A outlet of your choice.

That's it. Not even a second prize, apparently.

Although it may be difficult to burn $100 at Chick-fil-A in one sitting, it's not enough to treat the other 159,999 teachers to a chicken burger and waffle fries.

The chicken sandwich offer came just a few days after the DOE revealed its proposed budget for next school year does not include any pay raises for teachers. Education Commissioner Eric Smith called the sandwich a "thank you for all you do."

"This is the most ridiculous and demeaning thing I have ever seen DOE do," Parker said.

"Teachers are not charity cases," she said. "They are professional people. To even suggest there be a lottery for this kind of thing is ridiculous."

DOE says the monthly contest is just getting under way and it hopes to have more corporate sponsors. That way more than one teacher might get a prize. With December and Christmas coming up, maybe it could provide a lump of coal for each teacher to, you know, help with the winter heating.
