    Ackerman seeks unemployment check

Ohanian Comment: Just when you think Ackerman can't possibly shock you any more. . . . but the rich benefit from unemployment insurance as well as the poor. Well no, they benefit more.

Apparently the $905,000 in public buyout money wasn't enough.

Former Philly schools Superintendent Arlene Ackerman, who was paid that queen's ransom to leave the city, recently applied for unemployment benefits.

The school district confirmed yesterday that Ackerman applied for benefits this month.

Considering her salary of nearly $350,000 in her final tumultuous year leading the district, Ackerman will likely be eligible for $573 a week, the highest weekly benefit provided by the state.

Those benefits would then be reduced based on any pension payments she is receiving from her 40-year career in education, said a spokesman for the state department of labor and industry.

The district agreed not to fight any unemployment claims filed by Ackerman as part of the separation agreement her lawyers negotiated in August.

"I really think it's a joke, I'm laughing," said Michael Lodise, the head of the union representing the district's security officers. "With all the money she got, she still wants unemployment?"

Lodise spent more than four months battling the district over wording in layoff warnings sent to about 120 per-diem officers in June that was keeping them from collecting unemployment.

The district finally changed the wording in the notices this month and those officers are now collecting their unemployment, Lodise said.

Ackerman wasn't immediately available for comment.
