Anti-testing Letters

[Susan notes: Good for Stephen Krashen, asking journalists to cite research rather than publishing PR statements for a vested interest point of view. And doing it with humor.

And the crowning touch is to nail this proposal as what it is "radical."]

Please sir, more school!

The Monitor’s report (“Do longer hours equal more learning?” June 14) on a longer school day in Massachusetts reads like advertising copy for the organization behind this radical program. Where is the scientifically valid research supporting extending the school day by 25% to 30%?

Also, I find it hard to believe that more than a handful of students are enthusiastic about spending so much more time in school each day. The excited testimony of one fifth-grader sounds a lot like “Please sir, more push-ups!”
