Your Tax Dollars at Work: Stealth Bomber Performs at RPI Graduation

On May 17, 2003, in Troy, New York, an Air Force B-2 Stealth Bomber performed a flyover at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Commencement. The flyover was orchestrated by the school's ROTC program.

The Rensselaer commencement website provides a link to an Air Force fact sheet on the B-2, complete with Mission Statement:

    Mission
The B-2 Spirit is a multi-role bomber capable of delivering both conventional and nuclear munitions. A dramatic leap forward in technology, the bomber represents a major milestone in the U.S. bomber modernization program. The B-2 brings massive firepower to bear, in a short time, anywhere on the globe through previously impenetrable defenses.

Ohanian Full Disclosure Statement: I once taught Rhetoric and Contemporary Lit at RPI, but I have never written a Mission Statement.

Mission Statements are de rigueur these days--popping up everywhere from my dentist's office to the hardware store. I find them all, even those offered with good intent by admirable people, unsettling at best and--well, I have never known what the "at worst" would be--until reading the Mission Statement of the B-2 Spirit bomber.

I bet Enron had a Mission Statement, and I bet it didn't mention gouging the state of California into penury or bilking people of their retirement.

We're known by the company we keep. I never met a behavioral objective I liked and I put Mission Statements in the same barrel of offal. Next time you're tempted to write a Mission Statement, just think of this bomber.
