    Taking Action, Making Progress

    Best Practices. . .
When it comes to adequately responding in a collaborative manner, to issues of domestic terrorism, homeland security is still in its infancy. But as local, state and federal governments, private sector enterprises, and first responders continue to collaborate on crafting security solutions, best practices, pockets of excellence, and centers for innovation are beginning to emerge. Finding them, communicating their successes, and applying lessons learned to security threats facing other regions, industries, and agencies is the goal of the 2004 McGraw-Hill Companies Homeland Security Summit and Exposition. Attendees will learn about specific, innovative homeland security initiatives from the people creating and executing them and they'll get straight answers about how they're working.

    . . .Burning Issues
The Summit will also make a sober assessment of some of the more controversial issues involving Homeland Security, issues that must be debated and resolved before we can move forward effectively as a nation to address the threats we face while preserving the freedom and prosperity we value. How do we strike the right balance between homeland security and civil liberties? What is the most appropriate division of responsibilities among the private and public sectors? What mix of free market force and government regulation will establish sound standards to ensure optimum security and preparedness?

    . . .and Bold Actors
For the answers to these critical questions and insight into the homeland security best practices the Summit will convene a dynamic speaker roster consisting of elected officials and federal agency program managers, private-sector executives, first responders, representatives of state and local governments*. Summit sessions will focus on cross agency, public-private sector collaborations that have produced specific solutions applied to real security threats. Expert facilitators from private sector firms, the Department of Homeland Security, and cabinet-level departments will identify key observations that attendees can take home and apply to their homeland security initiatives.
