Education Industry Association Approves Guidelines for Tutor Qualifications

WASHINGTON,U.S. Newswire/ -- The Education Industry Association (EIA) has developed the first-ever voluntary guidelines for the qualifications of tutors. This guidance, which is aimed at helping tutoring providers set their own standards for their employees, outlines the skills and qualifications tutors need to help students succeed.
"The guidelines recognize that student achievement should be the primary measure of the tutoring provider's effectiveness," said Steven Pines, EIA Executive Director. "Approval of the qualifications by EIA's board is the capstone of an extensive and unique process initiated by the association's membership to support tutors, education service providers, educators and students."
The guidelines were developed by and for the education service industry, which includes individual tutors, as well as companies that operate learning centers, test prep services, schools (including charter schools), education management services, and alternative and special education programs. The guidelines are appropriate for professionals and companies of all experience levels, business sizes, and instructional delivery models.
"This industry is growing rapidly, and we felt it timely to set these benchmarks that will create the conditions for high quality services to be provided to consumers. We urge the buying public to seek service providers that have incorporated these guidelines," Pines said.
The guidelines are voluntary with each member or member organization implementing its own system of oversight and compliance. Additional review and monitoring of their implementation may be forthcoming based on guidance from the industry.
EIA's guidelines set forth qualifications for master tutors, tutors and education assistants.
Master tutor:
-- Demonstrated knowledge of the education service provider's education program/model,
-- A Bachelor's degree and/or teaching certificate, and
-- Completion of a research-supported tutor training program if the degree is not in education.
Tutor:
-- Demonstrated knowledge of the education service provider's education program/model,
-- Undergraduate work totaling at least 60 credit hours,
-- Completion of a research-supported tutor training program, and
-- Supervision from an education service provider.
Education assistant:
-- Demonstrated knowledge of the education service provider's education program/model,
-- Possession of at least a High School diploma,
-- Completion of a research-supported tutor training program, and
-- Supervision by an education service provider.
EIA also urges the use of pre-employment background screening to verify education, work history, and potential criminal records that may disqualify the individual.
