Rally for Children Left Behind
Beginning at Noon on Saturday, October 2nd, 2004
Ohio Statehouse, West Portico, in Columbus, Ohio
We want the best for our children. We now have the will and the resources to create great schools throughout Ohio and the United States. However, our efforts to improve the lives of children are being relentlessly attacked by unworkable policies – policies that discourage good teachers and curious learners alike. This must be changed. Decisions about our schools must return to those who know something about children – to the teachers, principals, and parents who do the work every day.
We are a group of citizens deeply concerned over current education policy, particularly the Bush Administration’s misnamed “No Child Left Behind” Act (NCLB), which has drained support from our schools and communities.
The results of this federal policy are clear:
Thousands of teachers laid off as schools struggle to make ends meet.
In classroom after classroom, students cramming for standardized tests rather than engaging in the real, deeper education that is needed to become successful, thinking citizens.
Local and state communities paying a huge price for the underfunded mandate of NCLB.
Vital resources pulled away from public schools to benefit private enterprises.
In addition, we believe that Bush’s overall policies—the costly Iraq war, the record-setting deficit, the tax cuts that reward wealth more than work—are undermining our future as a strong, prosperous and peaceful nation.
The people of the United States have wiser priorities:
A world based on partnerships among nations.
A country enriched by fair contributions from all people and businesses.
Clean, safe, sustainable communities now and in the future.
Access to good public education and health care for all of our children!
The Bush Administration is leaving our priorities behind.
Our plan is to galvanize Americans to give our government a clear message. NCLB fails America’s children, and we will not watch silently while schools close, children’s self-esteem is sacrificed, and dedicated teachers leave their field disillusioned by policy that ignores their expertise. Tax, spending, and foreign policy must also be changed to ensure that America reinvests in its youth and its collective future.
We invite you to be part of our efforts at the “Rally for Children Left Behind”, scheduled for noon on October 2nd at the Statehouse in Columbus, Ohio. We hope to see you there!
