Texas Teacher For Truth To Make Statement at National Press Club

News Advisory:

-- 'Texas Teacher For Truth' To Make Statement at National Press Club Friday

-- McCollum, Experts Outline Bush, Paige Education Failures Before Paige Delivers Remarks at Press Club

Professor Angela Valenzuela, who taught in the Houston Independent School System, will join Rep. Betty McCollum, D- Minn., Campaign for America's Future Co-director Robert Borosage and National Education Association Vice-President Dennis van Roekel to hold a news conference regarding the Bush administration's education record at the National Press Club on Friday, right before Education Secretary Rod Paige delivers his annual back to school address across the hall.

Houston, Tex. was the home of George W. Bush's education miracle. The miracle was a mirage. A number of Houston schools vastly undercounted the number of dropouts according to the New York Times (Schemo, Aug. 28, 2003, p.14). George W. Bush didn't leave this mess in Texas; he took it national. Houston's superintendent, Rod Paige, the architect of Houston's made-up miracle, is now the U.S. Secretary of Education.

Secretary Paige paints a rosy picture about the No Child Left Behind Law, but this too is a mirage. Tens of thousands of parents, teachers and concerned citizens came together at nearly 4000 gatherings across the country yesterday to begin a major mobilization to hold the White House and Congress accountable for its broken promises on education. The mobilization was organized in part by the Campaign for America's Future, the National Education Association and dozens of other groups.
