Miss Foley Award for Commissioner Christensen
Let's hope our professional societies step up with citations for Commissioner Christensen.
Subject: Miss Foley Award for Commissioner Christensen, Nov 9 Holiday Inn Central 11:30 am
Dear Commissioner Christensen,
Many of us in Vermont read your brave and honest letter in July regarding the cutting of funds from Washington. I have been personally following the extraordinary literacy assessments Nebraska has established and been duly impressed by your commitment to local control of the schools. The NCLB law is written in a way that invites states to do what Nebraska did, so it was a great shock to hear how quickly the DOE shot down this exemplary effort.
As a writer and National consultant on the teaching of writing, I can honestly say that Nebraska has some of the best trained literacy teachers in the country. I applaud the work you have done. For this reason, you have been chosen as a recipient of a Miss Foley Award. I will be in Omaha, Nebraska for my writing seminar on November 7 and the awards ceremony will be at 11:30 am. We would love to have you at the seminar all morning (it starts at 8:30) but will understand if you can only make it to the ceremony and to lunch after if it is possible. The seminar, entitled Putting Voice and Passion in Non-Fiction Writing will be held at the Holiday Inn Central in Omaha. You are invited and we would also like to offer 2 free passes to folks at the State Dept . of Education. Many of my books are used by teachers throughout the state and language arts administrators would be most interested.
Miss Foley awards are given to teachers and administrators who have made a lasting difference in lives of children.
Please let us know if you can attend,.
Sincerely,
Barry Lane
