White Coat Research to Assure Maximum Benefit from the Common Core Standards

Always on the cutting edge of science, technology, and classroom practice and looking for a follow-up to his spectacular TED conference appearance when he stunned attendees by releasing a jar full of mosquitoes into the audience to make a point about malaria, Bill Gates insists there's no time to wait for reconfirmation of "Stable chloroplast transformation of immature scutella and inflorescences in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)" by Cuiju Cui, Fei Song, Yi Tan, Xuan Zhou, Wen Zhao, Fengyun Ma, Yunyi Liu, Javeed Hussain, Yuesheng Wang, Guangxiao Yang, and Guangyuan He, published in Acta Biochimica et Biophysica Sinica, Volume 43, Number 4, April 18, 2011, pp. 284-291. The study has been retracted until all the results are reconfirmed.

Creating Teaching as a Profession: First Steps

Continuing their efforts to persuade teachers to give up the free-choice anarchism represented by their Scholastic book club memberships and to develop the scientific rigor of professionalism, Bill Gates and David Coleman met behind closed doors to discuss how to bring cutting-edge research into every professional development session in the land.

A research team led by psychologist Adam D. Galinksy, head of of Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University Dr. Galinsky may have the answer. The team has introduced the term "enclothed cognition" to describe what happens when people wear lab coats they think belong to doctors. The researchers found that


"in Experiment 1, physically wearing a lab coat increased selective attention compared to not wearing a lab coat. In Experiments 2 and 3, wearing a lab coat described as a doctor's coat increased sustained attention compared to wearing a lab coat described as a painter's coat, and compared to simply seeing or even identifying with a lab coat described as a doctor's coat. . . . The influence of clothes thus depends on wearing them and their symbolic meaning."

White Lab Coats for National Security

Colin Powell knows about the importance of clothing, and his America's Promise received half a million smackers to set up a Common Core Action Team Collaborative. Speaking of the military, The Military Child Education coalition received a grant "to develop and execute an advocacy campaign in support of the implementation of Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in multiple states by leveraging the voices and actions of its network of military families and uniform leadership."

You can take a guess what that "uniform leadership" is all about.

The National Writing Project is on the Gates Gravy Train. They have not released any information regarding their attire when giving or receiving Common Core writing advice. But we do know they received big money from Gates to work with the Literacy Design Collaborative. And the templates produced by those folk should scare the bark off anyone's maple tree.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Fund has already pumped a lot of money into professional development films promoting the Common Core. The Foundation features David Coleman in a short film on its website.

Offering grants to cash-strapped districts to purchase lab coats Districts is the next logical and patriotic step.

Science is Cheaper than Pedagogy

The scientific paper about wearing lab coats, Enclothed Cognition, is available at the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology website for $31.50. That's a lot cheaper than most things being hawked under the name of Common Core proficiency at NCTE.

We know that the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation values professional development. They gave $999,795 to Learning Forward "to audit states' and districts' professional development to align resources, time, and policies to support implementation of Common Core and innovative professional development tools" Located in Dallas, Texas, Learning Forward's Board of Directors includes Linda Darling-Hammond.

Professional Development Entrepreneurs Take Note: Learning Forward explains, "The grant from the Gates Foundation will fund the development of an iPD solution, which will provide educators at the state and district levels, a resource to audit their professional learning and use the results to improve decision making and practices."

The Anneheim conference program (billed as next door to the happiest place on earth) does not include a session on the benefits of wearing lab coats.
