Fordham Rates State Standards for U. S. History

Ohanian Comment" Not surprisingly, my state,Vermont, rates an F. To get an A, a state had to provide a laundry list of specific information, in the tradition of E. D. Hirsch. I used to get a big laugh by standing up in front of a large crowd and reading just one of California's standards--for 7th grade--out loud. Reading such a "content standards" that Fordham so loves takes about ten minutes to read aloud.

The new Thomas B. Fordham report report, Effective State Standards for U.S. History: A 2003 Report Card, can be found online. You may also obtain a (free) hard copy by calling 1-888-TBF-7474 or emailing fordham@dunst.com.

Six states—Indiana, New York, Arizona, California, Alabama, and Massachusetts-earned top marks with numerical scores of 27 or above out of a possible 30. Twenty-three states earned Fs with numerical scores of 14 or below.
