    FCAT Goals Choke Out Farming Classes

    INVERNESS - For nearly eight decades, rancher Valentine "Val" Rooks has worked hard and reaped the benefits of the land.

    During that time, he has seen the county he and his kin have called home for five generations rapidly evolve. Roads, commercial buildings and sprawling subdivisions have swallowed lands where he and his family once drove cattle.

    He also has seen another change, one that concerns him and threatens the very heritage of the Citrus County the Rooks family knows best.

    State and federal pressure to make public schools more accountable has pushed many schools in a very focused academic direction. The down side: Popular extras, including elective classes such as agriculture, can get squeezed. . . .
