California Educational Policy Says Thumbs Down to Credentialed Librarians

    DeeJae Arnett is a rarity. [She's] a credentialed library media teacher. . . .

Just one in seven California schools has a credentialed library media teacher on campus working part time or more. Library media teachers have teaching credentials and classroom experience in addition to a library media credential, which takes two additional years of study.

Statewide, the ratio of library media teachers to students is 1 to 4,673. . . .

    Nationally, the ratio is 1 to 953. . . .

California has long ranked dead last in the nation in terms of credentialed library media teachers, said Linda Jewett, coordinator of library services for Sacramento City Unified. . . .

Sacramento City school libraries run the gamut, from those that are open three hours a day and staffed by parent volunteers to well-staffed operations that are open well after the last class bell has rung.

Jewett has lobbied successfully to hire more credentialed library media teachers in the Sacramento City Unified School District. The district currently employs 15 -three at high schools, one in each of eight middle schools and four in elementary schools. . . .

Regionally, districts vary in terms of credentialed librarians. But generally, high schools and middle schools are given precedence. Elementary schools rarely have credentialed librarians.

Elk Grove Unified employs 12 credentialed library media teachers, one for every middle school and high school. Every single elementary school is staffed by a library technician, who have library experience but no credential. The district also operates a library certificate program in an effort to recruit and train librarians.

Folsom Cordova Unified School District has two credentialed library media teachers, one at each high school. The district has 17,600 students.

The Dry Creek Joint Elementary School District has no credentialed librarians. . . .
