People of Color Alliance Bypasses FCAT and Secures Diplomas
Press Conference Advisory
PEOPLE OF COLOR ALLIANCE BYPASSES FCAT AND GETS HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMAS FOR EDISON STUDENTS AND OTHERS.
A nationally accredited institution located in Maine accepts class credits, grades, and other criteria required to graduate from Florida and nationwide Public Schools and issues diplomas without the FCAT – giving our students a chance even if Governor Bush won’t!
On Friday, February 13th, at 3:30 p.m., the People Of Color Alliance for Public Schools is holding a press conference in front of the American Legion Park Auditorium, 6447 NE 7th Ave., just before a graduation ceremony for over 80 students from Edison High School and other public schools who have earned a high school diploma in spite of the biased standardized testing requirements of the Florida Board of Education.
The People of Color Alliance is a multi-ethnic coalition that includes: Haitian Refugee Center, Power U Center for Social Change, WeCount!, Farm workers Association of Florida/Homestead, Haitian-American Parents Association and This alliance represents African American, Haitian American, and Latin American parents and residents who believe that the Florida A+ plan requirements do nothing but ensure that our children of color are left behind. “To guarantee that our children, who have met every other requirement for graduation, have access to higher education, we had to take some action since the State seems willing to give up on them,” said president of the Haitian Refugee Center Jean-René Foureau”. “The whole situation demonstrates the flaws in a system that bases a child’s entire future on high stakes testing – especially when private school students don’t have to meet the same requirements notably the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test. One might think the plan was actually to encourage students to leave the public school system altogether,” said Fernand Philippe-Auguste, vice-president of the Haitian Refugee Center.
The Alliance found the North Atlantic Regional High School that was originally formed to establish criteria and issue diplomas for the growing number of home-schooled children. Many of their graduates have been accepted to respected institutions of higher learning and they are a nationally accredited school. “This is a historical moment for justice, now our young people can enjoy a graduation ceremony and receive their diplomas just like they should have been able to do from the public school system. Above all today we want to show them how proud we are of their hard work in earning these much-deserved diplomas, ” said Denise Perry of Power U.
