    "Errors were Made. . ."

At least four Colorado elementary schools, including three in Denver, were mistakenly labeled as failing on this week's state school report cards, and state officials say that number could grow.

State Department of Education officials admitted on Friday that a computer programming error mistakenly kicked out the results of Spanish-language state tests.

The results should have been included in calculating the school ratings issued Thursday by Gov. Bill Owens. Because they were left out, four principals were told their schools had received an "unsatisfactory" rating - the state's worst.

All four schools - Cheltenham, Munroe and Valverde elementaries in Denver Public Schools and Jefferson Elementary in Greeley - should have received a "low" rating. The change means 45 Colorado schools, and not 49 as initially reported, are rated unsatisfactory.

"I realize errors can be made at any time, but it's disappointing," said Munroe Principal Jody Cohn. "Not only did I have to talk to teachers and staff and explain my understanding of this unsatisfactory rating and keep them going and say we're going to work smarter, but I have to explain to the community two times, which puts me in an awkward position."
