Expectations Must Be Set and Met
Ohanian: Here's what you get when you look at a third grader as future fodder for the global marketplace: "Expectations will be set and met."

How many parents recognize this slogan as the essence of parenting--or inspiration for good parenting?

I refuse to recognize such slogans thrown out from corporate America as the essence of teaching.

Re: Jan. 22 article, "Lawmakers will jump into TAKS debate":

The comments of those who oppose higher educational standards are troublesome to me as a parent and a businessman.

No one wants children to fail, but it is society's responsibility to make sure they can succeed. That's why an expectation must be set and met. Otherwise, we are silent advocates to a system that looks the other way as children advance when they don't have the necessary skills. That is a reckless option, one that promotes the notion that some children cannot learn because of the circumstances in their life.

Today's third-graders will enter a competitive job market, one that is increasingly global. Solid reading, math and science skills will be required, and the best jobs will go to the best candidates. Allowances won't be made for a prospect's background or circumstances.

I hope that reality enters the debate about the TAKS.
