    Let Them Eat an Abacus
    While many blind students in their regular classwork use calculators that read out the answer, state officials don't allow them to use those devices when taking the FCAT, saying they give the students an unfair advantage. . . .

    Defenders of the FCAT argue that allowing certain accomodations could jeopardize the test's ability to truly measure a student's graps of certain knowledge and should be strictly controlled.

    "The question of (unfair accommodations) being a possibility was our issue," said Department of Education spokesman Adam Shores.
