Shocked, Shocked to Find that Cheating is Going on Here, Part 2
As Rachel Rubin began to solve the problems on her SAT II mathematics test June 2, she thought it had to be her lucky day. Nearly all the questions looked just like those her tutor [charging $100 to $150 an hour] had given her as practice. Out of 50 questions, there were at least 48 she thought she had seen before....

[Rachel told the authorities, Educational Testing Service investigated, and PrepMatters Inc., a test prep outfit, has acknowledged an "error in judgment." ]

Company staff members wrote down questions after taking an SAT II math exam in January and used them to prepare Rubin and others for the test....

Some test preparation companies have staff members routinely sign up for SAT tests to stay in touch with any important changes. ETS publishes or sells questions it is no longer using, but Jeff Rubenstein, assistant vice president for program development at the test preparation company Princeton Review, said his company has staff members take tests to make sure it does not miss something new and can answer questions young clients might have about unexpected twists and language. He said staff members are strictly directed not to copy the questions.

Seppy Basili, a vice president at the test preparation company Kaplan Inc., a subsidiary of The Washington Post Co., said that because the style and Form of SATI and SATII are standardized, there is no need for staff members to take the test. But he said the similarity of the SAT II math tests taken in January and June suggests the testing service should vary its questions more.

[The test prep company has not offered to refund any money but has promised free tutoring.

Rachel and one other student who admitted to having seen the questions have to take the test again. Officials said no one else reported seeing questions before.]
