Another Superintendent Says Kids Come First

May 2, 2003 -- WESTHAMPTON - Faced with a threat that he might lose his license if he awards diplomas to students who fail to pass the MCAS, Hampshire Regional Superintendent William G. Erickson isn't bending.

"Personally, it's not that big of a deal," said Erickson. "Unfortunately, it shifts the focus far away from the core issue which is what's best for the kids. I don't want to put the kids at risk."

Earlier this week, Heidi Perlman, a spokeswoman for the Department of Education, said that school officials could lose their jobs if they give diplomas to students who fail to pass the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System tests.

The Hampshire Regional School Committee has voted to award diplomas to all students who satisfy local graduation requirements.

Locally, Easthampton and Northampton school districts have also voted to ignore the graduation requirement portion of the state Education Reform Law. . . .
