Oklahomans Say Kids Today Are Better Educated Than They Were
Ohanian comment: Frosty Troy's The Oklahoma Observer is well worth the subscription price. Twenty pages, once a week, packed with crusty insight about and deflation of politicos.
A lack of financial support and adequate teacher pay are the two most serious issues facing the state, according to a statewide survey commissioned for the fourth consecutive year by the Oklahoma Commission on Educational Administration (OCEA).
The OCEA survey indicates 77 percent of the respondents think a lack of financial support is a very or fairly serious issue along with 73 percent citing adequate teacher pay as a problem.
An overwhelming majority of citizens would favor an increase in state funding: raise teacher pay to regional average--87 percent, reduce class sizes--75 percent, and capital improvements--63 percent. . . .
Citizens did express a great deal or a lot of confidence in education, giving k12, career and technology education, and higher education positive marks. . . .
When asked their opinions or perceptions of education, more than half the respondents believe children, today, get a better education than they did, and 48 percent believe the quality of education is related to the amount of money spent.
About one-third of respondents do not think money is directly related to the quality of education and 16 percent are undecided. . . .
OCEA hopes polling results will be helpful to state legislative and community leaders in planning the future education of Oklahoma students. Ha! Did you see any mention of high stakes testing being a priority of Oklahoma residents?
