    Florida Commissioner Claims Success

    June 4, 2003

    To the Editor:

Re "The Changes Unwelcome, a Model Teacher Moves On" (On Education column, May 28):

Florida is a success story of education reform. Achievementscores are up; dropout rates are down. Education standards are significantly higher in our schools today than five
years ago, and more students are meeting them.

This year, Florida children of all ethnicities, income levels and native languages made significant gains for the fourth straight year. Forty-six percent more African-American fourth graders read at grade level this year than in 2000, as do 26 percent more of their Hispanic
    classmates.

We're closing the achievement gap between white and minority students every day, as children in Florida classrooms shatter the soft bigotry of low expectations by rising to the challenge before them.

Rising student achievement, year after year, means more children in Florida are learning. We understand that some will challenge our methods, but defy them to challenge our
    results.

    JIM HORNE
    Commissioner of Education
