Education Editorial: When Politics Trumps Accuracy

Warning: Reading the following editorial may cause injury.

In education, accountability and choice have two things in common: They work, and the education establishment opposes them.

In the latest results of reading tests under the National Assess- ment of Educational Progress, often called "the nation's report card," Florida students scored higher than in 1998, when the test was last given. Moreover, Florida showed more improvement than all but four other states.

The major policy differences between then and now are -- accountability and choice.

Florida has achieved improve- ment without massive spending increases. States that spend the most, but lack choice and accountability, ranked in the bottom half of the nation in gains, according to researchers at the Manhattan Institute for Policy Research.

They said, "The Nation's Report Card shows that real reform has brought real results, while states that just throw money at the problem are falling behind."

Florida seems to have a winning formula. It would be foolish to abandon it and return to the policies of the past that are holding back other states.
